What is a Doula?

I sat down with Aisha Fanning from Vegas Family Doulas to get some insight about natural family support for Mammas who just had babies! So, I sat down with her and after that wished I had a doula like that in my life when I had my children.

Sondra: So tell me why did you decide to become a doula?

Aisaha: I decided to become a doula because I noticed that there was a certain point when you become a parent, that you need all the support you can get without being judged. Not everyone needs support at the same time, or in the same way in their journey. But having someone you can confide in lift you up and to check in with, you even clean the sink full of dishes or make a meal will help you power through the day. And being that support to someone who may not have it otherwise is very fulfilling.

Sondra: That’s Great! It was hard for me when I had my kids because I was relying on in-laws who were coming over and showing me what to do with the baby for the first time which was super awkward. Especially because you aren’t married for a long period of time and then someone’s telling you what to do with your baby. I have incredible regards for your services because its so important to be able to feel you have this support from someone that YOU choose, that has the experience you need and that you connect with.

So someone who may not know about Doula support, what specific services do you offer?

Aisha: Vegas Family Doulas offers postpartum and infant care support, placenta encapsulation, and various pregnant, postpartum, and parenting classes! And, so our services are exactly how you described where you have family and sometimes families have families that come in and visit to help with the baby help, but its sometimes hard because you’re invested emotionally with that relationship with those people and sometimes can’t feel comfortable.

Therefore it’s not always easy to direct or decline or ask or accept for anything that’s being given. If something doesn’t feel right but your mother-in-law or your mom is saying it, it might make you not feel that empowerment, the way we actually do. We empower you and we let you find that motherly instinct in yourself without encroaching on your own abilities. You don’t have to worry about feeding us or making sure we’re entertained.

And there’s no bias on your decisions for your baby and your family, they are your decisions. We just help guide you and on how to navigate it tangibly for yourself. And, so what Vegas Family Doulas offers is postpartum and infant care doula support. So postpartum mom and infant care we are your personalized baby book, your professional best friend. And you know you’ve got the stack of baby books on the side of your nightstand and you read through them but until you’re actually in the trenches you don’t understand what that means.

Sondra: So, do you teach how you change a diaper? Cut fingernails? Swaddle?

Aisha: Well baby basics. Yeah! Even the burping. It’s cute to see how families are burping the little ones all nice and serene…But, you know it’s like look you got to kind of get in there a little bit, right.

Sondra: I mean we take all of this for granted. But it is all stuff you got to learn how to do it. But when there’s no or little room for trial and error it makes that learning curve a lot easier that you are not on your own.

As a Heath Coach in Ayurveda and doTERRA Wellness Advocate who works with families and people with Autoimmune disease about how to care for themselves naturally, I appreciate this Amazing Women and family support business and that’s why I wanted to collaborate with you. So, was starting and operating your own business as you expected?

It’s so much better than I expected. And I mean, I know that sounds like a cliche to say but it it’s when you find your passion and your calling it just seems to come seamlessly, and I mean even my name means mother giver of life. So being able to mother other mothers, like just somehow felt natural and because you’re just being a friend and you get paid to be someone’s friend and you get valued for that and that’s important like being valued for this.

Sondra: That’s so great, I agree passion is everything! What do you feel makes your agency the best in Las Vegas?

Aisha: I feel what we do at Vegas Family Douals that makes our agency the BEST in Las Vegas, is a few things really. We have a diverse team of doulas, we excel in in providing postpartum and infant care doula support and are a contributing face in the community, volunteering and participating in events for a cause. We have been serving the Las Vegas for over 8 years.

Sondra: Its so nice to see an agency gives back in the community! You have incredible positive energy, are there things you do on a daily basis to maintain that energy?

Aisha: Thank you! I do devotions daily to start my day, I give myself 30 minutes in the morning alon before my house wakes up, so I can be mindfully prepared to tackle what the day throws at me.

Sondra: So what do you feel or what would you recommend for women who are looking for a doula?

Aisha: Make sure that the training is there because anybody can be someone’s support person but without proper training you can do more hurt than help and in a postpartum period that’s very vital to someone’s healing. I also feel that you should do a kind of a little a little background check onto what their philosophies or biases are because you don’t want to have someone that does that’s totally opposite of what you’re believing in wishing to do because then it’s not a serene environment for you or baby professionalism. You want to make sure someone’s checking and answering your e-mails answering your phone calls showing up when you need them and their reputation is good. You know I think those are some things to consider, as well as how you feel when you’re around that person how that person makes you feel.

Sondra: Aisha, thank you for taking the time to talk with me today. I know my subscribers will find this information useful!

This was an eye-opening experience for me, especially as a mother of 2 who experienced some the struggles of being a new mom without the added community support. This is a little bit different than having your mother or mother-in-law spending the next 3 – 6 months telling you the best ways to care for your child without considering your new found maternal care.
