An Ayurvedic Recipe for Spring. This is a wonderful warm cereal that’s tasty and has some beautiful health properties. This time of year, from an Ayurvedic perspective, it is considered a Kapha Aggravating time. Its explained like the melting of snow from the winter, the bodys accumulated Kapha begins to melt and can cause too much mucus and can even aggravate allergies for some people. Although, diet plays a major role in provoking severe aggravation during this seasonal change or it can support it. This recipe is great at supporting and balancing the excess Kapha in the body, it is also helpful with bowel elimination and weight loss.

Ingredients: Serves (2-4 people)

½ Cup Barley

3 Cups of Purified Water

Add ins:

½ Tsp Vanilla Extract

1 ½ Tbsp Organic Whole Flax Seed

1 ½ Tbsp Organic Ground Flax Seed

1 Tbsp Grass Fed Ghee

1-2 Tbsp Maple Syrup (to taste)

Fresh Almond Milk

Sprinkle of Cinnamon (to taste)

Directions:

  1. Place ½ Cup Barley and 3 Cups Water in the Instapot and cook for 27 minutes
  2. Once done, add ½ Vanilla Extract scoop into barely. Then scoop out barley and place in a bowl (strain any excess liquid into a cup*). Then place 1 Tbsp Ghee in a sauce pan on low heat and add 1 ½ Tbsp Whole Flax Seeds and 1 ½ Tbsp Ground Flax Seeds. Cook until they start to pop, then remove from heat (you can add in rasins too). Add 1/2 Tbsp – 1 Tbsp of this mixture per bowl of the cooked barley.
  3. Add a Sprinkle of Cinnamon, ½ Tbsp of Maple Syrup and a little Almond Milk – Enjoy 😊

So why is this so good for you during the Spring? I will share a little bit of an Ayurvedic Perspective on each of these ingredients.

Barely – Reduces Kapha. Reduces body fat, facilitates sweating, relives fatigue. (*Drinking any excess water from your barley is very good at flushing your kidneys. Drink barley water if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.) Good source of Fiber. Good for diabetics.

Ghee – Relieves bloating and gasses. Facilitates normal digestion, increases memory and intellect, brings loveliness, beauty, splendor, female beauty and is good for the voice. It balances all 3 biological energies in your body (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). It is considered a wonderful rejuvenating food in Ayurveda.

Cinnamon – Balances Kapha at the skin and mucosal membranes. Increases urine and reduces cough
